SocialWise Media Group is launching an internship program for low income students, in partnership with Minneapolis Community & Technical College. Through the Great Lakes Internship program, SocialWise Media Group will train & black, women, and minority students in STEM & entrepreneurship. SocialWise Media Group specializes in creating technology based marketing outreach for Nonprofits, Governments, and businesses. They have handled digital media advertising campaigns for the state of Iowa, The University of Minnesota, and many local nonprofits. “As a black woman, in a traditionally white-male space, I see internships for students of color as a critical key to diversifying technology. We need black-owned companies mentoring these students, and black owned incubators helping them launch their own startups.” Ini Augustine, CEO, SocialWise Media Group Two students will participate for the fall & spring semesters. Students will learn Digital Media, TV/radio Production, and business management skills. After graduating, students will have connections to organizations,, mentors, and skills in the high-demand technology field. Since SocialWise Media Group is located inside the NEON Business Incubator, students will also have access to some of the best business minds in North Minneapolis. Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) received $175,862 from the Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates to fund Career Ready Internships for low-income students attending the College. Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) is a public two-year college located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. MCTC enrolls nearly 13,000 credit students annually and is an active partner in initiatives designed to strengthen the social, economic and cultural vitality of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation & Affiliates first started funding the creation of paid internships for low-income students at four-year institutions in 2013. The organization has seen firsthand the benefits of paid internships, grantees reporting 98 percent of the participating students either graduated or continued in their academic programs the following semester. The organization is now seeking best practices for establishing and administering paid internships at two-year colleges like MCTC.
